Books are my weakness. Not only do I enjoy reading them, but I tend to buy before I try. My kids are the same way. To keep costs down, I shop at used bookstores & warehouse sales, take advantage of coupons, and encourage the kids to earn a few free books of their own through summer reading programs, like Barnes & Noble: Free Kid’s Book During Summer Reading Challenge and Borders: Free Kid’s Book During Summer Reading Challenge (speaking of, anyone tried to redeem the form since the bankruptcy was announced?).

At Half Price Books, you’ll need to track your summer reading by the minute, not the title, to get the freebie. If kids age 14 & under read for at least 600 minutes this summer, they can swap the reading log for a $5 Back-To-School Bucks reward. You’ll need to turn in your summer reading log by August 7, 2011, to get the deal.
