Reminder: Free Admission to Museums, Botanical Gardens, Performances & 100+ National Parks

It’s the first weekend of the month, which means it’s time to be on the lookout for free admission deals to performances, botanical gardens, museums, and other attractions in your city.

Here are a couple of quick lists to keep you in the loop:

Museums on Us: Are you a Bank of America account holder? If so, take advantage of the Museums on Us perk. Just show your Bank of America credit or debit card on the first weekend of every month, and you’ll get free admission to over 70 museums and attractions in cities across the U.S. You’ll find deals for free admission to the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, the Bronx Zoo, the Birch Aquarium at Scripps in San Diego, and others.
Target Sponsored Happenings: Target sponsors free admission days & buy one, get one ticket deals in cities across the U.S. You’ll find free performances at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., free admission to the Miami Children’s Museum, BOGO tickets to performances at the Congo Square Theatre in Chicago, and more. Unlike Museums on Us, Target’s deals are valid at various points during the month, so mark your calendars to take advantage of the deals.

And don’t forget to take advantage of a fee-free day to visit a national park–you won’t need to pay entrance fees, commercial tour fees, or transportation entrance fees when you visit more than 100 national parks on the following dates:

September 25 (Public Lands Day)
November 11 (Veteran’s Day)

I love parks. Local parks, state parks, national parks. I’m not picky. I just like having places to hike, explore, and relax that aren’t filled with traffic & smog.

Want to check out a few national parks on the cheap this summer? Pick a fee-free weekend to go, and you won’t need to pay entrance fees, commercial tour fees, or transportation entrance fees to visit more than 100 national parks.

Fee-free weekends at national parks will take place on the following dates:

August 14-15
September 25
November 11

Not all national parks charge a fee. For instance, at Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park in GA, we can hike up & around the mountain and park for free year-round. To make the most of the deal, plan to spend the fee-free weekends at the 100+ national parks that typically charge a fee.

It’s time for National Park Week; hopefully the weather is cooperating where you are to make it a pleasurable week to be outside. Even if it doesn’t, you can skip the entrance fees at all 392 U.S. National Parks during National Park Week, which runs from April 17-25, 2010.

Making a good deal better, some of the concessioners providing food, lodging, transportation at 100+ national parks are offering discounts during the fee-free week.

It’s spring, and hopefully by mid-April, it will feel like spring in most of the U.S. It already does in Atlanta. I’d post our 10-day forecast, but it’d border on cruelty for those of you dealing with heavy rain or snow.

On Veterans Day, Nov. 11, National Parks in the U.S. will waive their admission fees. Anyone can take advantage of the fee-free day—the parks are offering the deal as a way to thank men & women for their service as well as to encourage the rest of us to take time to honor those who sacrifice so much to protect and serve our country.

Free Admission to U.S. National Parks on National Public Lands Day, September 26

Here’s a National “fill in the blank” Day I can get behind, as I’m sure my tax dollars go to support the 391 national parks in the U.S.: September 26 is National Public Lands Day. Technically, it’s a day of service designed to improve the parks. In 2008, 120,000 volunteers build trails & bridges, cleared trails of trash & invasive plants, and planted trees—more than 1.6 million of them, in case you’re curious.

But even if you don’t want to participate in the cleanup, you can still take advantage of the space, admission is free at all 391 national parks on September 26, 2009.
